We talk often about systems change, and this Tuesday, we have a chance to make real change to how we frame violence and public safety. We have an historic opportunity to shift the system to invest in prevention, and to address low-level, non-violent crimes as just that — low level, non-violent offenses. The Violence Prevention Coalition is proud to be an early endorser of Prop 47, and to be in the company of allies such as The California Partnership, Children’s Defense Fund, The Women’s Foundation, Community Coalition, Latino Coalition for a Healthy California, State Senator and Chair of the Public Safety Committee Loni Hancock, Assemblymember Nancy Skinner, and countless others who are committed to changing our justice system to one that relies less on incarceration, and more on addressing the root causes.
VPC members are walking precincts, phone banking, and sharing information on this and other issues that matter to our communities to ensure that we all show up and vote on Tuesday. If you’re looking for guidance on the ballot measures, please see our compiled voting guide, that shares the positions of numerous partner and member organizations.
So mark your calendar. Double check your polling place. Bring your friends, and remind your colleagues. Vote. Because change is in our hands.
