Violence Prevention Coalition of Greater Los Angeles
Annual Report
A Message from the Coalition Director:
Dear Members,
As we begin the new year, we at VPCGLA want to express our sincere gratitude for the tremendous work being done by our members and our community. Over the past year, VPCGLA has participated in critical gun safety advocacy efforts, bringing it to the forefront of the conversation in Los Angeles as well as on a state level.
VPCGLA has also focused this past year on domestic violence, with our Policy Working Group remaining on the cutting edge of current thinking on how best to address and prevent domestic violence -- from advocating for legislation to forging non-traditional partnerships among gang-intervention agencies, domestic violence support groups, and non-violent parenting organizations, to leading the City's Domestic Violence/Gang Nexus Task Force.
Our efforts to create a County-wide network among hospital Trauma Teams is also coming to fruition, as VPCGLA continues to facilitate a network that will become a leading model for hospital based collaboration in responding to issues of violence. Our participation in UNITY (Urban Network to Increase Thriving Youth) has strengthened national connections and partnerships, and VPCGLA, and the members it represents, have become part of the national efforts to create urban blueprints to address youth violence.
Additionally, our Re-Entry Working Group is undergoing a significant transformation. With new leadership, and newly engaged members, the Re-Entry Group will be partnering with Loyola's Restorative Justice Center as well as the Office of Restorative Justice of the Archdiocese to create a training curriculum for our members that is community-based and member-driven. Members have also been a part of the County's efforts to create a Re-Entry blueprint for Los Angeles.
Finally, VPCGLA itself has been represented at local, state, national, and international conferences and trainings. From Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas' Empowerment Congress to the United Nations Small Arms Conference, VPCGLA is there.
These accomplishments help advance the work of all of our members, and the strength of our collective voice is one that will continue to move people and policy in the year to come. We at VPCGLA believe this is not just a city of angels, but it can be a city of our better angels.
As foundations push for increased collaborations, our work is more in demand, with fewer resources available to make it happen. We are asking for your support, your belief in the power of community, and your conviction that together, we can make our city a better, safer, healthier place for everyone.
Wishing you warmth and health this new year,
Kaile Shilling
Coalition Director
