The purpose of the Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network is to connect organizations providing arts programming for incarcerated youth to strengthen support for young people, build a collective voice to partner with probation and public agencies, and promote integration of arts organizations as part of a comprehensive reintegration strategy for young people.

In 2012, the Violence Prevention Coalition began convening organizations providing arts-based programming to incarcerated youth.  Initial activities included joint presentations as part of the VPC’s annual Gang Violence Prevention & Intervention Conference, and as the group evolved, it became clear there was more concrete work this group could do together.  In 2014, the group came together formally as the Arts for Incarcerated Youth Network.  This Network connects organizations providing arts programming for incarcerated youth to strengthen support for young people, build a collective voice to partner with probation and public agencies, and promote integration of arts organizations as part of a comprehensive reintegration strategy for young people. All providers have at least 2 years of experience (most much more) providing services to this population.

There is no other collaborative like this in Los Angeles.  It is the only place where arts-based organizations working with incarcerated youth come together for a common purpose.  The effort of the Network is separate and distinct from the work of its members, focusing on shifting culture within Probation, building collective partnership, and creating a space for a unified voice to advocate for better services, protocols, and support for system-involved young people.  It is positioned to become a model for community-public partnership.
